The Mellon Foundation Symposium “The Bilingual Mind,” focuses on bilingual language mixing and creativity. The two-day interdisciplinary program will present papers by internationally-renowned scholars who take up the current challenges of bilingualism. Presenters and participants will explore the issues of the bilingual brain and creativity from the perspective of language mixing. Topics include bilingual language acquisition, language mixing (Spanglish, Hinglish, Chinglish, etc.), and global popular culture (advertising, music, and poetry ). A session will be devoted to mixed language systems and creativity.

In a world in which people are increasingly mobile and ethnically self-aware, questions concerning bilingualism and multilingualism take on increasing importance from both scholarly and practical points of view. The new international circumstances that have developed over the last two decades– in which linguistic/ethnic communities that had previously been politically submerged have asserted themselves – have provided scholars with new opportunities to study the phenomena of individual and societal bilingualism and multilingualism that had previously been closed to them.
